Knoxville Event Photographer :: Happy Birthday & Retirement, Dad! We love you!!

We had a surprise party for Dad’s 70th birthday (actually March 1st), and his retirement!  He was born in 1947, just 9 months after my grandparents got married…you do the math!  He and Mom started their one-of-a-kind friendship in 6th grade (but probably even before that, really).  They got married in 1968, and had Kenneth in 1975.  I came along 8 years later.  He and Mom gave us such an awesome life – the opportunity to do nearly any activity we were interested in – whether that be baseball, basketball, soccer, band, piano, guitar, or anything else!  They encouraged us to get involved with our church growing up.  They put both of us through college, and now they are watching both their kids do what they love!  They have spoiled seven grandchildren over the years (5 of which came along in the last 3 years!).  He is an amazing husband, dad, and Papa, and we all love him so so much!
Dad is finally enjoying retirement!  He started working as an electrical engineer in 1973, got his PhD in 1977, and had a patent in 1978 and 1987!  That’s a lot to accomplish, and we wanted to celebrate with some of his favorite people! I only mentioned we should have a surprise party for him, and then Mom ran with it (are you surprised?).

Mom schemed for WEEKS about this. She sent out invitations, and had RSVP’s sent to my house so Dad wouldn’t find out. She planned the menu, made some things ahead of time (after Dad had gone to bed), and avoided making chocolate cookies at their house because the smell would make him wonder…(those ARE party cookies, after all…).
Party day finally arrived!  Steve, the kids, and I met up with Mom and Dad for lunch that day, and then sprung the news that Dad had to go with Steve because we were “doing something special for BOTH of them” (ha!).  I went with Mom, and we picked up the final items, put the party together, and then welcomed Dad’s friends – friends from work, friends from church, and so many others that love and appreciate Dad and have so much respect for him!  It was so so neat to see!
We decided that after Dad’s heart attack scare in August, that we wouldn’t startle him with everyone jumping out saying “SURPRISE!”, so we just had everyone hold balloons and signs, and then line the street to welcome him home!  How sweet!  Dad was smiling from ear to ear.  Success!  Loved surprising him!
Please pardon the photos – this wasn’t exactly portrait lighting.  😉
